We are a medium to large archery club formed in 1984 based in the outskirts of Shrewsbury with a membership of just over 100 (Junior & Senior) and while many of our members take part in competitions our main aim is to have fun and enjoy our shooting. As well as target, we shoot clout and have a small field course in a nearby wood.
The club shoots outdoors at its own field near Withington. Club practice nights during the Summer months (April - September) are Tuesday & Thursday evening but members have 7 day access to the shooting ground and can shoot at any other time provided basic safety precautions are followed. Bosses are permanently laid out at 20 - 60 yards and addition bosses can easily be set out at up to 100 yards if required. Indoor shooting during the winter months (October to March) is at Sundorne School, Shrewsbury on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30 pm. Novices are encouraged to shoot on Monday/Tuesday evenings. No coaching is available on Thursdays as that is the only time the coaches get to shoot. The club holds monthly field shoots between October and April. These use a mixture of 2D, 3D and paper faces and are intended to introduce archers to field shooting as they include a high proportion of short to mid-range shots. The field is also marked out for clout shooting although there is insufficient overshoot for compound bows. Maps showing the location of the clubs shooting venues can be found in the links section.
In addition to taking part in local and national target competitions we orgaise a number of GNAS field and BLBS longbow shoots. Some members also attend GNAS target and clout competitions, NFAS field shoots and BLBS longbow shoots. Clout shooting is popular within the club and members have attended clout shoots as far afield as Penrith, South Wales and Somerset. While we encourage members to take part in competitions we do not push them and are quite happy for them just to shoot on club nights simply for enjoyment.
We are currently involved with after school archery clubs at a number of local schools and also run one-off have-a-go archery taster sessions for other schools and organisations during the course of the year. Unfortunately there are more requests than there is free time and we are not able to accomodate them all. If you want a have-a-go session, you are welcome to ask but we cannot guarantee being able to fit you in. The calendar is normally pretty full by the end of January.
Beginners courses are run throughout the summer months (May - August) whenever there enough people interested. We have a minimum age of 9 for safety reasons. See the beginners page for more details.
